Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script

Which story is worth the gamble has already been settled by somebody before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set. Trace a few hits backward and you often find a book at the start of the pipeline. ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance revolving around a secret child, is drawn from the reelshort tv novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. A novel by Cora Reilly is the source of Bound by Honor, which ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, as a mafia arranged-marriage series. In Korea, a web novel and webtoon underpin the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating. With a number of app owners also running reading businesses, source material sits close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. When no book exists, writers lean on well-worn tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene has to deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to condense a long drama story into scenes like that.

    Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces

On screen, the format’s economics show up through casting. The same names keep popping up if you scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb. Noah Fearnley headlined ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance tale about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman fronted two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. Actors with a following on one app reach the next title with a head start, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind. DramaBox operates a production team in Los Angeles.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

Going by TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically shot in eight to ten days and costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is placed at $150,000 to $250,000. Close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days comes to, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers selling overseas have reported lower numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets, Jiuzhou also said, about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations and 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series, so the costly shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds

Editors slice the footage into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is designed around a question the next episode promises to answer. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that moves you from one episode to the next. Taken together, the segments of a 70-episode series come to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary a great deal by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Viewers who never open the app can still see the same footage, because ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Editors are, in other words, shaping video dramas for multiple screens at the same time.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

Finally comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. Per TheWrap, the standard model leaves the first eight to ten episodes free. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes unlock with coins, and ReelShort’s blog puts the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Your store may show something different, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the contentious part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best left alone.

Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation

With the newest production stage, the camera is gone entirely. ReelShort now carries animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action catalogue. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, centers on Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer get away. It should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reports that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Fox Entertainment is the plainest example of traditional studios taking notice. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox. Across two years, Fox also committed to produce more than 200 vertical titles. Fox-produced series already on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. Seeing a network-scale producer commit to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

Line up the stages side by side, and the business logic becomes clear. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall drive the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. Using only publicly reported figures, the table below lays out typical time and cost at each stage. When no reliable number has been published, the table notes that instead of guessing.
